This is my weekly post where I choose to appreciate a book for its cover art or overall design – to me, a well-designed book is like a piece of art. We all judge book covers to some extent. Personally, it’s usually a title/cover combination that pulls me in when I’m browsing in a bookstore. I can’t say that I’ve ever decided against a book with terrible cover art if I liked the sound of the plot, but I have purchased special editions of books, or multiple editions of books based on their cover art. If book covers didn’t matter, publishers (looking at you, Penguin!) wouldn’t put out so many beautiful editions!
This week I’m focusing on some of the most adorable books I’ve ever seen – the BabyLit series published by Gibbs Smith, written by Jennifer Adams and illustrated by Alison Oliver. I don’t even have children, and I already own five of these adorable books! I bought Dracula for a friend’s child, and let me tell you, I had a hard time not keeping it for myself! They’re a whimsical nod to classic literature and they actually focus on different learning aspects, like counting, colors, and rhyming – so educational!
Side note: I’ve started using my DSLR for these pictures, instead of my phone and I may have gone a little overboard taking pictures – I was just having so much fun!
Pride and Prejudice, Counting, ISBN: 9781423622024
Sense and Sensibility, Opposites, ISBN: 9781423631705
Jane Eyre, Counting, ISBN: 9781423624745
Alice in Wonderland, Colors, ISBN: 9781423624776
Sherlock Holmes, Sounds, ISBN: 9781423634119
I don’t think you can ever have too many pictures of lovely books! I adore this series. Sense and Sensibility is one of my favourite books and it’s great to be able to share it with my nephew before he can even read. If you haven’t seen it already, keep an eye out for Anna Karenina – it’s a fashion primer and too gorgeous for words!

They’re all fantastic. I hope to have them all someday. I think it’s a great way to start introducing children to classics. I bought Dracula for a cousin and she loves it.
