By Emily Carroll

From the back of the book: It came from the woods. Most strange things do. Give mysterious, spine-tingling stories follow journeys into (and out of?) the eerie abyss. Come, take a walk in the woods and see what awaits YOU there.

This book! This book is beautiful and wicked and lovely and more than a little creepy! I read Through The Woods late at night, not thinking it would actually scare me – I mean, it’s just some short stories in graphic novel format, right? WRONG. Carroll’s work started off slow, setting the mood and then giving me the heebie-jeebies with her final story! I have a very active imagination and I consider myself lucky that I didn’t get any nightmares related to the imagery in this book.

I don’t want to say much about the content of the stories – you really should just check out this book. I think the first is my favorite though because it was my introduction to Carroll’s writing and wonderful artwork. I did enjoy the plot of each comic and could imagine them being fleshed out into full-length novels.

Overall the book is beautiful. From the cover to the glossy, full-color pages full of haunting and horrible monsters, lurking in the shadows of our everyday lives. I especially enjoyed the parting comment from the wolf.
