This is my weekly post where I highlight and appreciate cover designs and the general physical appearance of books. We all judge book covers to some extent. I can’t say that I’ve ever decided against a book with terrible cover art if I liked the sound of the plot, but I have purchased special editions of books, or multiple editions of books based on their cover art. If book covers didn’t matter, publishers wouldn’t put out so many beautiful editions!
I loved looking at my mum’s copy of Gnomes as a kid, especially because it takes a realistic “field guide” approach to gnome life. Yes…gnome life. I’m going with that. It’s by Wil Huygen, originally published in 1977. I wanted to photograph every page because I love all the little hand-written notes.
Oh, I think this book is beautiful. I would have loved to have it as a child. I think it would inspire so many wonderful imaginary friends. I think I would enjoy having it even now!
