Life of a Book Hoarder

Top 13 Reads of 2015

Everyone’s doing it, and dammit, I’m going to too! Here are my top 13 reads of 2015! Why 13? Because I’ll pick any number I want! 😀 I didn’t count any re-reads and these are in no particular order because it was hard enough just picking some favorites.

Rat Queens (series) – Kurtis J. Wiebe

Brawling, drinking, swearing, sexy, badass bitches who formed a little guild and fight monsters for money…what’s not to love? This is everything I’ve ever wanted in a fantasy comic and then some!

Saga (series) – Brian K. Vaughan

Space, assassins, sex, a war between races, people with wings, people with TV heads, a cat who can tell when you’re lying and the most adorable illustrated baby.

The Gracekeepers – Kirsty Logan

This book was not at all what I expected, in the most delightful way. It was mystical and the relationship between the two main characters was lovely. Also, this isn’t the cover I own, but it’s lovely!

The Love Song of Miss Queenie Hennessy – Rachel Joyce

This is a companion novel to The Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, which I read a year or so ago. It’s a moving story and the end had me crying like a baby, which is rare. In fact, just thinking about the ending makes me tear up. Anything that gives me such lasting tear-power is a star in my book.

The Color of Magic – Terry Pratchett

This was my introduction to the magical, wonderful and hilarious Discworld. Rincewind, Luggage and Twoflower lead me through a fantasy world unlike any I’ve ever read and I need to read more! Lucky for me, there are more than 40 novels in the series, plus all sorts of companion books!

Boneshaker – Cherie Priest

After letting this book wallow in my Amazon long-list for too long, I finally purchased it and I’m glad I did. A sort of alternate historical fiction, semi-post-apocalyptic, pseudo-zombie attack, steampunk adventure.

Parasite – Mira Grant

A sci-fi about what can happen when the world creates medical grade parasites that live in our bodies to make us healthier…only…there are some side effects. This book had me feeling squicky in the best way! Also that photo-realistic cover…gorgeous!

The Girl in 6E – A.R. Torre

An erotic thriller – what’s not to love? This book was sexy and exciting and I couldn’t put it down.

Circling the Sun – Paula McLain

This was the best historical fiction I read this year and it, of course, lead me Beryl Markham’s autobiography, which I really enjoyed.

V-Wars – edited by Jonathan Mayberry

This collection of shorts read like a novel – it was a twist on the vampire virus and what happens when it starts to permeate our society.

The Watchmaker of Filigree Street – Natasha Pulley

This is a stunning debut novel. The character building was excellent and I still enjoy the way the somewhat surprising turn the main relationship took. Plus, a clockwork octopus! And that cover art!!!

Enola Holmes (series) – Nancy Springer

This is a fantastic, middle-grade series about the young sister of Sherlock and Mycroft Holmes. Enola is smart, endearing and open minded. I devoured this series and learned quite a few new vocabulary words. I only wish there were more books!

The Lies of Locke Lamora – Scott Lynch

This. Book. OMFG. Action, violence, foul language, magic, amazing worldbuilding, lying, scheming, double-crossing, Gentlemen Bastards!
