This is my weekly post where I highlight and appreciate cover designs and the general physical appearance of books. We all judge book covers to some extent. I can’t say that I’ve ever decided against a book with terrible cover art if I liked the sound of the plot, but I have purchased special editions of books, or multiple editions of books based on their cover art. If book covers didn’t matter, publishers wouldn’t put out so many beautiful editions!
I love books with character and special design elements, and The Selected Works of T.S. Spivet is chock full of them! My aunt let me borrow this book and from the moment I laid eyes on it, I told her she wasn’t getting it back (turns out she was okay with that). This is not only a fantastic looking book, but a great read too, about a young boy genius’s journey to the Smithsonian. I find all the little notes, maps and doodles inspirational and wish I could keep up with art journaling. This is published by Penguin, ISBN: 9780143117353.
I have this one. While I still need to read it, I agree it is lovely.
