Monthly Wrap Up

April Wrap Up

April!

In April I read 11 books for a total of 2,652 pages and an average of 88 pages per day. It turned out to be a great month, given my slow start.

The standouts were The Tangled Lands and Killing Gravity though I had a pretty solid reading month. I ended up with two DNFs though, but I’m glad I didn’t push myself to finish them. I’d rather spend the time reading I something enjoy.

Reviewed:

Dusk or Dark or Dawn or Day by Seanan McGuire
First Sentence: The wind howls, the rain comes down in sheets, and Patty is still dead.
Notable Quotes: “People aren’t so good at being good to one another. We try hard enough, but something essential was left out in the making of us, some hard little patch of stone in the fertile soil that’s supposed to be our hearts. We get hung up on the bad, and we focus on it until it grows, and the whole crop is lost.”
“The world is hard. There’s no need to make it harder.”

The Tangled Lands by Paolo Bacigalupi & Tobias S. Buckell
First Sentence: It’s difficult to sell your last bed to a neighbor.

The Price Guide to the Occult by Leslye Walton
First Sentence: They have been called many things.

The Wild Robot Escapes by Peter Brown
First Sentence: Our story begins in a city, with buildings and streets and bridges and parks.

Undead Girl Gang by Lily Anderson
First Sentence: The problem with your best friend dying is that there’s no one to sit with you at funerals.

A few thoughts on Goodreads:

Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
First Sentence: Everyone my ages remembers where they were and what they were doing when they first heard about the contest.

East of West by Jonathan Hickman

Harry Potter & The Prisoner of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling
-Audiobook-

Reviews to come:

Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence
First Sentence: Ravens!
Notable Quote: “I don’t like to get angry. It makes me angry.”

Killing Gravity by Corey J. White
First Sentence: Trying to comprehend a whole star system while my ship bleeds atmosphere?

The Next Together by Lauren James
First Sentence: The last time they were together, it was late evening and they were being followed.

DNF:

The Swan Book by Alexis Wright
First Sentence: Upstairs in my brain, there lives this kind of cut snake virus in its dolls house.

Bash Bash Revolution by Douglas Lain
First Sentence: “It’s happening.”

My TBR Tear Down has been a complete bust again. I was going to move on with the Artemis Fowl series, but as you may recall from my review, I decided I didn’t want to finish it. I didn’t end up picking any other books. Back on track next month, hopefully!

I figured I’d do a quarterly update as well. I’m at 44 books for the year, which Goodreads estimates as 3 books ahead of schedule for my goal of 125. Woo! Of those 44, only 8 are in my dusty bookshelf category, which is abysmal.

A further breakdown:

Male authors: 16
Female authors: 29 (my math isn’t wrong, Obsidio gets credit for both)

5 stars: 15
4 stars: 11
3 stars: 10
2 stars: 6
1 star: 2

Not bad! I’m trying to avoid those 1s and 2s. Hence the 4 DNFs I have so far.

Feel free to update me on your own reading goals! How’s it going? I don’t actively try to read a certain amount of books a month, I just try to read as much as my life allows. I’m glad to see I’m on track so far (likely this is because I shirk adult duties and avoid having a social life, but whatever!)

  1. You’ve read RPO 3 times?! I’m impressed! I read it last month and LOVED it too. I grew up more in the 90s, but I at least recognized most of the 80s references even if I had never seen the film, heard the song, or played the game. It was a celebration of all things geek, and I was down for it.

I’m assuming you went and saw the movie?! What did you think?

    1. I grew up in the 90s too but have a healthy appreciation for the 80s, especially the video games because my dad had a super Nintendo. This time around I annotated the book. I’m gonna do a post on that. It was even more fun!

Noooo I didn’t see the movie and I won’t. I think it looks like garbage lol. A friend saw and told me about some of the differences and I’m all set. Plus I don’t want to see that interpretation of the oasis. They’re gonna ruin all the characters for me.
