5 Things I Loved About Kim Reaper

Kim Reaper (vol 1)
By Sarah Graley

My Edition:
Paperback, 110 pages
2018, Oni Press
ISBN: 9781620104552

Kim, like most students, has a part-time job while she attends university. Only her job a little out of the ordinary – she’s a grim reaper! Newly hired and human, Kim is relegated to only reaping animal souls. When a classmate, Becka, follows Kim through a portal in order to ask her on a date, the two get up to more trouble than they can handle.

Comics can be tough to talk about without giving too much away, so I wanted to do something different this time. I’ve compiled a quick list of all the things I love about the comic (spoiler: it’s basically everything).

+ The art style – I won’t read a graphic novel or comic if I don’t like the art style. I started out following Graley on Tumblr and Instagram, so I already knew I loved her style. This has the same cutesy style, but Kim has more edge than Graley’s autobiographical comics. Also, the faces her characters make are perfect and hilarious. I want them to be emojis for my phone. Also, there’s a lot of purple used in the coloring and I fully approve.

+ The characters – Kim is badass and cute and sassy and also sometimes a colossal idiot. Becka is positive and grounded and also cute and keeps cookies in her bed for snacking! The reapers are snarky and adorable. Also, there are lots of cats!

+ Lesbian (bi?) rep – Becka and Kim are 100% adorable together. It’s not really mentioned whether or not either one is bi, but I don’t want to flat-out say they aren’t.

+The fashion – Kim and Becka both have some outfits I’d love to own, but my favorite is Kim’s shirt with the skulls on her boobs.

+ The plot – I love modern fantasy and a college (or, uni, as Graley is English) student working part-time as a reaper is right up my alley. The events in the book are ridiculous and fun and I can’t wait to see what else lives in the universe Graley created. Plus, there are some emotional beats that gave me some nice feels.

If you’re looking for a modern take on a college-aged grim reaper, with a f/f relationship and feel-good vibes, then check out Kim Reaper! I will certainly be buying volume 2 when it’s released later this year!

    1. Scared in a weirded out way? Or in a creepy way? Lol. Also if you like cats, her Our Super Adventure comics are about her and her man and their 4 cats. So funny and cute.
