Judging A Book

Judging A Book By Its Cover: Eternal Sailor Moon (vol 4)

This is my weekly post where I highlight beautiful books from my collection. We all judge book covers to some extent (don’t lie, you totally do!) I created this feature to showcase and admire the art and design elements of some of the books I own. If covers didn’t matter, publishers wouldn’t make so many wonderful editions!

Back again with more Sailor Moon! I have volume 5 on my shelves, waiting to be read and photographed, but that will be it for a while because I don’t think the next volume is out until maybe September…or November? Either way, gives me time to save up. But I just want to complete the set! You know what makes me even more insane? If they came out with full color editions, I’d buy this damn set all over again!

Anyway, this beauty was published in 2019 by Kodansha Comics, written and illustrated by Naoko Takeuchi, lettering by Lys Blakeslee, cover by Phil Balsman, ISBN: 97816323615542019. The small paperback was published in 2012, ISBN: 9781612620008.

Jupiter is bae.

So stinkin’ cute!

I love Black Lady! She’s way cooler than Chibi.

I can only ever think of him with his US dubbed name, Melvin.

Pluto is bae.

One of my fave images of the gals – so 90s, but I would love to look half as good in any of those outfits!

  1. Hi Milliebots! In a prior post I revealed one bookish secret — I often buy multiple copies of the same book. Now, you’ve guessed my second: I frequently DO judge a book by its cover! This is scary! Beautiful photos, BTW, of very striking artwork. I much enjoyed. Thanks!

P.S. I like the Tanith Lee quote you use in the header of your blog. I really must go back when I have some spare time and re-read some of her books.

    1. I think many of us judge books by covers. If a book is really hideous, I probably won’t buy it unless it’s a author whose work I know I love, or it sounds real amazing. And I buy books simply because of their beautiful covers too! I’m glad you enjoyed!

I definitely recommend revisiting her work. I still need to read through what I own. I get sidetracked by my quest to own it all and forget to read haha.

  2. Perfect timing! I’m rereading Sailor Moon now! I haven’t gotten the Eternal Editions, though. I looked at them in the bookstore and they are lovely, but pricey! But it does seem like it might even out in the end since they seem to collect more volumes in one edition. At any rate, I guess it doesn’t matter because I am just borrowing them from the library.

    1. I’ve been getting them strictly from Amazon to save on the cost, but they are still pricey. I love the large glossy format. The small pbs I have are 12 volumes, plus 2 shorts volumes and 2 sailor v volumes. I noticed some of the shorts were included in this volume and it’s already surpassed the storyline of the small pb. So my guess is maybe 10 volumes of these big ones total? Idk if they’ll do sailor v but they could do that in one volume. I’m crazy about SM so I don’t mind rebuying. I kinda consider them in the realm of those HP illustrated editions. The casual fan probably won’t buy these but they’re worth it if you want nice editions.

      1. Yes! I was looking at them longingly for quite some time in Barnes and Noble! So gorgeous! So shiny! And I think it’s exciting new releases might catch the eyes of new fans!

I haven’t read the Sailor V volumes! I totally need to find those now!

        1. I remember reading so much more of the manga in middle school, borrowed from the library. They were hardcover. I think they were like the S and Super S storylines. I hope they do those someday,, even if it’s just the small pbs. I also wish I’d bought the tv series on DVD long ago. I really love the voices for the original US dub. I don’t like the Crystal art style and even though they re-released the original art, they used the same new dub and the voices are just too strange for me.

          1. They put a new dub on the original anime?? I’ve been wondering if I could find that one since I stopped watching the Crystal version–didn’t like the pacing, among other things–but now I’m just disappointed.
