This month I read 9 books for a total of 2,192 pages and an average of 71 pages per day. Lots of little novellas this month and I’m ok with that, as I tend to have a shorter attention span in the summer (and a more active social life!) I think my favorite of the month was Jane Steele.
Jane Steele by Lyndsay Faye
First Sentence: Of all my many murders, committed for love and for better reasons, the first was the most important.
Notable Quotes: “Grief is a strange passenger; it rides on one’s shoulder quiet as a guardian angel one moment, then sinks razor talons into one’s collarbones the next.”
“Until something has been taken from you, it is difficult to gauge what sort of holes will be left by its absence.”
The Invoice by Jonas Karlsson
First Sentence: It was such an incredible amount, 5,700,000 kronor.
Souvenirs & Other Stories by Matt Tompkins
A few thoughts on Goodreads:
East of Midnight by Tanith Lee
First Sentence: Dekteon opened his eyes.
Hook by Terry Brooks
First Sentence: “Shhhh!”
Notes from the Shadowed City by Jeffrey Alan Love
Reviews to come:
The Interminables by Paige Orwin
First Sentence: A spectral apparition shot overhead on rotten vulture’s wings.
The Devil You Know by K.J. Parker
First Sentence: I don’t do evil when I’m not on duty, just as prostitutes tend not to have sex on their days off.
Notable Quote: “The fact is, the more you look for something, the likelier you are to find it, even if it isn’t actually there; sooner or later, if you look hard enough, you’ll find something. The trick is then to interpret what you’ve found as what you were looking for.”
Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
First Sentence: After a year of slavery in the Salt Mines of Endovier, Celaena Sardothein was accustomed to being escorted everywhere in shackles and at swordpoint.
