We all judge books by their covers, whether we realize it or not. If we didn’t, why else would cover art exist? I don’t know about you, but part of the appeal of books for me is their appearance. This is my weekly segment to appease the more superficial reader in me and showcase some of my more visually appealing books.
The Red Fairy book is a collection of fairy tales put together by Andrew Lang – it’s actually part of a 12 book set featuring various fairy tales from around the world. I was able to weasel my mother’s modern set away from her (perhaps they will be featured another week) but I happened to stumble upon this vintage copy at an antique store. I adore it and would love to get my hands on the complete set someday.
Based on my limited internet research I think this copy is from 1890 (if you have other info, let me know), but I can’t be sure because the book isn’t dated. Curse you early publishers! It’s published by The Mershon Company, based in New York, with “numerous” illustrations by H.J. Ford and G.P. Jacomb Hood. If it is actually that old, it’s in pretty good shape! The pages are all there, though the binding is very broken in so I won’t read this copy. The print is also very small, but the illustrations are detailed and the cover art is fantastic.
Your blog is great! I was wondering if you could kindly visit my blog and like or comment on anything you found interesting?
