Look, no one needs another damn review of The Hobbit. If you haven’t heard of the book or heard/read someone’s opinion on it, you can throw a virtual stone on any literary website and probably find more reviews, articles, and homages than you could shake a stick (virtual or otherwise) at. So instead I’m going to talk about some of my favorite scenes – the ones that keep me rereading this book every year!
I’ve seen several accounts on YouTube post their reactions to one-star reviews on their favorite reads and I wanted to jump on the bandwagon.

Anyway – I figured I’d do a post with some nice pictures now that my arm is healed and give a brief explanation of what I chose to get.
I don’t believe in love at first sight and if you start talking about it, I’ll likely roll my eyes at you and sigh in your face (rude, I know). However! When it comes to reading, I do believe in love at first page.
This post might come off as (incredibly) whiny to some of you, but if you can’t tell from my weekly Judging posts, I appreciate the cover art and overall design of my books. That’s not to say every book in my library must be pretty. In fact, I love used books and oftentimes when casually browsing, I’m not looking for specifics when it comes to cover art. However, there are several books that I collect multiple copies of, solely for their art and design and other times I see a pretty series or cover design and I want that one!
This is my weekly post where I highlight and appreciate cover designs and the general physical appearance of books. We all judge book covers to some extent. I can’t say that I’ve ever decided against a book with terrible cover art if I liked the sound of the plot, but I have purchased special editions of books or multiple editions of books based on their cover art. If book covers didn’t matter, publishers wouldn’t put out so many beautiful editions!
A friend was going to get rid of this old box set, but smartly asked if I wanted it first. The books are pretty beat up, to the point where they’re unreadable because the spines have all separated from the covers. But I like the box they come in and their simplistic covers (even if they have yellowed with age). This set was published in the late 1970s by Houghton Mifflin. The pages themselves aren’t really photo-worthy and I don’t like to open the books since they’re already falling to pieces, but The Hobbit does have the standard illustrations throughout.
